This is the toughest mind-set to adopt because we instinctively seek security. First we seek it from parents, blankets and teddy bears. Then from teachers, role models, and peers. Then from spouses and employers and the government. And always, we want God to take care of us. From the cradle to the grave and beyond, we desperately want some one to provide for our basic needs and keep us from harn way. But the problem with seeking security is that it doesn't exist. Security is a state of mind, not a reality. You may feel s cure or insecure, but once again, perception creates reality. What you think you are is what you will become.

People who fall into the security trap pay an enormous price for their illusion. The days of giving your heart and so to a big company in return for job security are over. If y< doubt that, talk to any of the 3,000 people being let go eat day in corporate America. And if you're counting on the government to take care of you in your old age, good luck. Your Social Security check will provide little more than a very basic subsistence.

The reality is that life is an insecure state. You can fi deathly ill at any moment. You can die at any moment. You can go broke or lose anything you've ever counted on at any moment. We all come into the world penniless and leave tl same way. So if you're concerned about security, take hear The unborn and the dead are totally 100 percent secure, an that's how we spend all but the tiniest fraction of eternity.

When you mention the possibility of going out on your own, friends, relatives, and others may advise you to forget about it and cling to the security of a paycheck, paid health care, sick leave, a pension plan, and all the rest of it. If an when that happens, ask yourself this: Are they financially i dependent from their work? Are they living their dreams an the kind of life you would like to lead? If your experience anything like mine, the answers will always be no. They mea well, but like most people, they're caught in the security trap.

I'm not advocating throwing caution to the winds. Indeed, having a job can reduce the stress of making the transition from employee to entrepreneur. You need to take advantage of every resource you have, and a stable job is an excellent resource. But if you hope to become set for life, your job should be thought of as a transitional resource, not as a security blanket. When you find yourself passing up or not seeking opportunities to do what you really want to do because of your job, you're most likely caught in the security trap.

You beat the security trap by having a concrete plan to leave your job by a certain date, or sooner if your business is earning enough income. Give yourself a year, two years, five years, or whatever amount of time you need to phase out of your present employment and into full-time entrepreneurship.

Then start focusing on learning the skills and seeking the opportunities that will make you set for life. There are more opportunities to get rich than you could go through in a million lifetimes, and you only have one. Most people never see or capitalize on them because of the illusion of security. And that leaves even more opportunities for you.

Real economic security is generated from within. It comes from knowing that you know how to spot, create, and capitalize on opportunities. When you master that knowledge, you take a giant step toward financial freedom.
