When Woody Allen remarked, "Showing up is eighty percent of life," he must have been thinking about life in the " world. In most jobs, particularly those in large organization success depends far less on the results you produce than on how well you follow the written and unwritten rules. Show up on time, put in your hours, be loyal to your boss, do the won you're assigned, and the paychecks follow on schedule.  In very predictable, but, like civilization, it's very artificial.

In contrast, consider the world of nature, where survival 100 percent dependent on results. A hungry tiger in the wilderness doesn't get fed for pursuing his prey from nine five. When he makes a kill, he eats. When he doesn't, he starves. If he's a good hunter, he prospers. If he's a poor hunter, he's history. There are no time clocks, no charity, sick leave, no paid vacations, no points for trying hard, and no kissing up. Mother Nature is an unforgiving, no nonsense, 100 percent results oriented bitch of a boss.

But what if that tiger is born in captivity and his owners are Siegfried and Roy? In this environment he learns, like most employees, that being well fed comes with the territory. Instead of being results oriented, he performs the show business routines his masters teach him. Turn him loose in the jungle without teaching him to hunt, and his days are numbered.

Like the tiger in the jungle, the micropreneur has no choice but to be results oriented. Putting in long hours means nothing. Being well organized means nothing. Knowing the right people means nothing. Following a daily regiment means nothing. Being efficient means nothing. You can do all those things and still go broke.

Results are everything. You either close the sale or you don't. You make a profit or you don't. You keep your overhead low or you don't. You get paid or you don't. Your customers come back or they don't. Welcome to the jungle. But while it's sometimes cruel and unforgiving, many of us find life in the entrepreneurial jungle far better than life in the confines of employment. Like the tiger in the jungle, you know that freedom and success are yours if you do the right things. When was the last time you saw a tiger trying to get into a zoo?

Am I against following rules, routines, and regimens? Absolutely not as long as they contribute to getting results. Just don't let them become ends in themselves. When that happens, the tail of your business ends up wagging the dog.

Efficiency is doing a job right. Effectiveness is doing the right job. Effectiveness means results, and when you're a micropreneur, results are everything.
