Thinking long term is a rarity in today's world, where instant gratification is the norm. Most people in the job world get up and go to the office every day in return for a paycheck, interesting work, and the opportunity to interact with people they like. They give little thought to what their career and work life will be like in five, ten, or twenty years. They assume that whatever happens to them is something over which they have little or no control. If you start a home-based business with that attitude, proceed at your own peril.

We have an enormous amount of control over our future if we take charge of it and don't resign it to the winds of fate. Let me give you a personal example. On New Year's Day 1980 I was a fledgling writer with one book recently published and another scheduled for publication. I remember asking myself, What would you like your life to be like in 1990? I can't say that I had any specific answers, but I had a good general picture of how I wanted my life to be. By 1990 I wanted to have several more books in print. I wanted to have my own one person operation, writing books, speaking professionally, and consulting with businesses. I wanted to be a former university professor, free from the bureaucracy and the petty politics of academia. And I wanted to have enough money put away to be financially independent. That was my vision of the good life the freedom to do as much or as little work as I wanted, operating from the comfort of my home.

Ten years went by, and one day in 1990 I realized that all those things that I had envisioned in 1980 had come to pass. Damn! I thought to myself, It worked! I hadn't had a business plan but I had had an overall vision of where I wanted to be in 1990 and how I was going to get there.

Being able to think long-term is a strength of my friend Somers White, a Phoenix, Arizona-based financial consultant who has made millions from home. As Somers puts it:

I think successful people look a little further down the line. Unpleasant things that won't destroy your productivity if you focus on your long-range goal. Success is a matter of deciding who's going to be in control. I program myself for success every day so I can make the day successful, then the week, and so on. The next thing you know, your life is a success just like you planned it to be.

What's your dream? What do you want your life to be like ten years from today? What kind of work do you want to be doing? Where do you want to be living? What kind of income do you want to be making? What do you want your net worth to be? Get a clear picture of it in your mind's eye and focus on it frequently. Then resolve to do something every day that will contribute to making that dream a reality. If your experience is anything like mine, it will pay off handsomely.
