I don't know if the story is true, but it contains much more than a grain of truth. Education is wonderful stuff. It's been my life's work in on form or another. But the fact is that just about all forms schooling prepares us to work for others. Think about it. The message we get from parents, teachers, and society in genera when we are growing up goes something like this: "Go to school. Make good grades. Get all the education you can s you can get a good job." With very few exceptions, most of u haven't been taught how to be successfully self-employed. In the school and job worlds, success depends on how we you play follow-the-leader. The leader tells you when to show-up, gives you work to do, and imposes deadlines and acceptable standards of performance. If you show up and do you work well without causing any unnecessary disruption, you're rewarded in school with good grades, promotions, diplomas, and special recognition for outstanding work. Similarly, the job world rewards you with a salary, fringe benefits, promotions, interesting work, friendships, and recognition. In short, if you were successful at playing the school game, you're well prepared for the job game. You know how to be a good follower, and that's important in the job world. But the odds of making a million working out of your home by being a good follower are almost zero. The first thing you need to realize is that success in the job and self-employment worlds involves different journeys requiring different maps. Too many start-up businesses fail simply because their owners continue to think and act like employees. You can have a great self-image, high expectations, a positive attitude, and steely determination. But you aren't going to get rich by following the wrong map. There are major differences between the job and self-employment maps, and some common misconceptions may be holding you back. One of the biggest of those misconceptions is the belief that you aren't the entrepreneurial type.
