Maybe you should—or maybe you shouldn't. That's probably not what you were expecting to hear or what you wanted to hear. But the truth is that some people are destined to succeed at operating their own business and others are not and will fail in business. Not every person is suited for starting and operating a business—not because they are afraid, not because they do not want to succeed, and certainly not because they are stupid—mainly because starting and operating a home business is hard work, much harder than the vast majority of new entrepreneurs realize. In fact, it is not uncommon for home business owners to work in excess of 50 hours per week, week in and week out, with little time off and for much less financial compensation than most are willing to admit. And other statistics suggest that four out of every five businesses will fail within the first five years of operation, making for a very bleak forecast. Personally, I think that the numbers of business failures actually may be skewed to a degree. If a person starts a business and a year later decides to close the business because it turns out he or she does not enjoy being self-employed, would that be classified as a business failure? Statistically yes, but in reality I do not believe this example would constitute a business failure. These people may be guilty of not fully understanding what they were getting into or not taking enough time to rationalize their decision to start a business or possibly found another full-time opportunity that sounded better. This is definitely not failing. Besides, success and failure are relative terms. As explained above, a person who starts a business and decides to close the business after a year because he or she doesn't like being self-employed may very well consider the experience fulfilling and a success. He or she may have learned a lot from the experience.
